Building 209 Preservation

Building 209 is located on the Veterans Affairs Campus in West Los Angeles. The current two-story property dates back to 1940. The building is currently being used to house previously homeless veterans.

Building 209 is the transformation of an existing building within the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Campus and consists of 55 units (22 one-bedroom units, 32 studio units, and 1 manager unit). The building also includes community/service rooms, a gym, commercial communal kitchen with multiple cooking stations for cooking classes, 2 laundry rooms and counseling offices. Rehabilitation currently underway will include significant repairs and upgrades to major systems such as plumbing, heating systems, PTAC Units, Energy Efficiencies and upgraded security system. The design is consistent with the surrounding VA buildings, with modern amenities. All of the surrounding landscaping and parking will be improved as well.

Additional Building Amenities are:

  • Kitchens (stoves, cabinets, microwaves, sinks/faucets, refrigerators, dishwashers, garbage disposal, fully furnished units with televisions)

  • Bathrooms (sink/faucets, bathtubs, toilets, mirrors), new bedroom furniture (mattress, bed frames, bedroom cabinets)

  • Common areas such as community/service rooms, gym, communal kitchen, laundry room, library and counseling offices

  • VASH contract counseling services will be provided to every resident via an assigned case worker at no charge to the tenant

VA Building 209 in Los Angeles, CA

This property has a project-based VASH voucher which provides funding for social services and counseling for the veterans. Step Up on Second, Inc. provides social services, and serves as the property manager.

Building 209 provides a safe and high-quality living environment within a campus that provides other services including a hospital. A substantial number of veterans struggle to become reacquainted with society after serving their time in the military. By providing these individuals with shelter, skills training, wellness access and programs, the VA, Redeem and Step Up are working together to help improve the lives of these Veterans. In addition to providing high quality housing, this development is also part of the transformation of the West LA VA campus into a facility that better serves the intended population — veterans.
